My Singing
I began my singing training at Cambridge University, where I was a choral and academic scholar at Gonville and Caius College, studying English Literature.
After this I spent many years touring world-wide with The Sixteen and working for professional choirs such as the BBC Singers and many London churches (including the Brompton Oratory; St Bride’s, Fleet Street; the Tower of London; All Saint’s, Margaret Street).
Once I began training my voice as a soloist and an opera singer at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, I maintained ties with my professional choral roots by singing for ten years with the Farm Street Singers, Farm Street Church, Mayfair, and also the Royal Opera House Chorus.
I spent two years training at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama on their Postgraduate Singing Course, learning with Professor Susan McCulloch, and then a further two years on the GSMD Opera Course, learning with Professor Rudolf Piernay. After this, I attended the Cardiff International Academy of Voice intensive vocal training course with Dennis O’Neill OBE whilst beginning my opera career. I was twice a Crear Scholar, studying song with Malcolm Martineau, and also took part in his Italian Opera Course, working with Susanna Stranders and Matteo Dalle Fratte.
I have worked for most of the major opera companies in the UK, including ROH, ENO, Opera North and Scottish Opera, and I am most at home vocally with the operas of Mozart, Strauss and latterly Wagner – singing Gutrune for the Wagner Society of Great Britain conducted by David Syrus and Tony Legge, and being selected from an international field to take part in the Lauritz Melchior International Wagner Competition.
I do also still enjoy performing the Baroque music that made such a part of my first years of training and have sung with the English Concert and Instruments of Time and Truth both in opera and oratorio.
As well as the opera, I enjoy working for choral societies, whether that be in the UK or abroad, and have sung solos for many groups including Worcester Choral Society, Salisbury Musical Society and a number of Messiahs in Spain.
I still check in with my teacher, Marie McLaughlin, whenever our schedules allow.
